THREE LESSONS ON FAITH
FROM JUDGES
Text: Acts 13:16-20
Introduction: As we think about the various eras in Israel’s national
history, we begin with their Egyptian bondage, move on to the Exodus and wilderness
wanderings, and pass through the conquest and division of Canaan. In his sermon
at Antioch of Pisidia Paul reviews these things and then comes to the next period
in their history.
Read TEXT. The age of the Judges was a time when things became loose and righteousness
slipped away. The introductory section lays out some key considerations which
form the structure of the entire narrative and thus give us…
TITLE.
I. There is unconquerable faith
A. Notice how the book of Judges begins: Judg. 1:1-4, 8-10, 16-18—as long
as the people had faith in God, they conquered
B. We too need an unconquerable faith in God by which to live: Rom. 1:16-17,
2 Cor. 5:7, Heb. 11:6
C. This is the kind of faith that will bring us victory: 1 Jn. 5:1-5
II. There is unwarranted faithlessness
A. Notice what happened as time went on: Judg. 1:19 (could not=would not)—note
v. 21 (lost what they gained), 27ff
B. What led to this situation?—lack of faith: Judg. 2:7-13
C. We must be careful not to allow a heart of unbelief to draw us away from
God: Heb. 3:12-19, 4:1
III. There is undeserved faithfulness
A. What was God’s response when His people snatched defeat from the jaws
of victory?: Judg. 2:1-5—God was faithful to visit them, remind them of
His goodness, and tell them what He expected
B. When we’re tempted, God is faithful: 1 Cor. 10:13
C. Even when we sin He is faithful: 1 Jn. 1:9
Conclusion: The period of the Judges was a dark time in Israel’s history,
but there are still heroes of faith for us to consider: Heb. 11:32
The question is, will we be among those who live as though we know not the Lord
or among those who are determined to live by faith?
