2 Peter 1:5-11

Introduction:

A. Peter in this passage reminds us we must grow in our service to God.

B. Eight areas for growth listed here.

C. In this lesson we will look at knowledge

Discussion:

I. What Is knowledge?

A. Webster defines as

1. The fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained

through experience or association

2. acquaintance with or understanding of a science, art, or technique

B. BDB/Thayer defines as

  1. 1108 gnosis - knowledge 28, science 1; 29
  2. knowledge signifies in general intelligence, understanding

a. the general knowledge of Christian religion; esp. of things lawful and

unlawful for Christians

b. the deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of this religion, such as

belongs to the more advanced

3. moral wisdom, such as is seen in right living

C. Bible defines as

  1. Prov 1:7
  2. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise

wisdom and instruction.

D. A practical definition for us would be

  1. Understanding the commands God has given us
  2. That which allows us to know God

II. Why do we need knowledge?

A. In our relationship with God

1. Knowledge needed to be saved Jhn 6:44-45; 9:32

a. Make a new covenant Jer 31:31-34

b. Better covenant better promises Heb 8:6-8

2. This is why He commanded the Gospel preached

a. Mt 28:18-20; Mk 16:15-16

b. 1Cor 1:21; Rom 10:13-17

3. Is commanded 2Pet 1:5; 3:18

4. Be not unwise but understand Eph 5:17

B. In our relationship with our brethren

  1. We must know enough to avoid being a stumbling block 1Cor 8:1-9
  2. Must know what and when to do things

C. In our relationship with alien sinners

  1. Must know how to show God to sinners 2Cor 2:14
  2. We are to teach all nations Mt 28:19-20

III. How do we get or develop knowledge?

A. Must learn from Jesus Col 2:3; 2Cor 4:6; Mt 11:29

B. Gain knowledge by study

  1. Study (be diligent) to show approved 2Tim 2:15
  2. Bereans Acts 17:11
  3. Truth in Scriptures Jhn 8:32; 17:17

IV. What is the result of strengthening our knowledge?

A. Made free from sins Jhn 8:32

B. Escape the pollutions of world 2Pet 2:20

C. Remain steadfast 2Pet 1:10; 3:17-18

  1. Able to teach others 2Tim 2:2
  2. Save ourselves and family

D. Without knowledge we will

  1. Be destroyed Hosea 4:6
  2. Cause others to be lost today Rom 10:1-3

a. Lack of knowledge reason for many fallen Christians today

b. Apollos' lack of complete knowledge could have caused many to be lost

Acts 18:24-28

E. Without knowledge, faith and virtue will be useless

  1. Knowledge is necessary for faith Rom 10:17; Jhn 8:32
  2. Cannot stand upright if we don't know what is right.

Conclusion:

A. What about you?

B. How strong is your knowledge?

C. What changes should you make now to begin growing as you should?

D. Invitation to the lost.
