1. The idea of entering into
a marriage with someone who has been divorced does not seem to bother some
people. In fact, most people think nothing of it. Therefore according to Matt
5:32, anyone who is divorced that marries again, will cause their mate to
commit adultery. It is this way whether the mate is male or female. Gender was
not the point of emphasis in this passage, it is the action that is under
consideration. Because of the prohibition to sin and the laws against laying
stumbling blocks and because of the warnings given that we should not cause
others to sin, when a divorced person re-marries, they cause their mates to
commit sin. In this process, they themselves commit sin. Both parties stand
comdemned according to God's law. Another way to say it is a divorced person
has absolutely no right to get married again (unless their first spouse dies
first {Rom 7:2-3}).
People who know the greek language have written that the word for adultery in
this case is "moichao" which means to commit adultery. This word is
present active verb. Meaning that this is a continous action. Whether there is
sexual activity or not, by their union under man's laws, they are joined
together as husband and wife. Therefore, those who remain in a marriage in
which one or both of the parties were the divorced person from a previous
marriage, are commiting an active, acting, continous action, act which Jesus
calls adultery.
