• Our Duty Towards Others
• It Is The Second Most Important Duty We Have.
• Introduction
• Too often we fail to recognize our duty towards others.
• These others may be our brethren, family, or friends or they may be
complete strangers.
• God holds us accountable for how we treat others.
• Selfishness is one of the major sins that we so often allow into our
character.
• Selfishness is the primary cause of sin.
• Selfishness prevents us from noticing others.
• Let us notice some things about others.
• Others
• First, they are not us.
• That has to be obvious.
• They are not God. That also is obvious.
• God tells us that we must consider others as more important than ourselves.
• Our judgment will be measured heavily by how we treat others.
• Not just those who are nice to us, but even those who abuse us and use
us.
• Matthew 5:43-48
• “You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbor,
and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those
who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven;
for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward
have you? Do not even the tax-gatherers do the same? And if you greet your brothers
only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”.
• Luke 10:25-28
• And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying,
‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ And He said
to him, ‘What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?’ And
he answered and said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with your mind;
and your neighbor as yourself’. And He said to him, ‘You have answered
correctly, do this, and you will live.”
• The parable of the good Samaritan follows.
• Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,
but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important
than himself; do not mere look out for your own personal interests, but also
for the interests of others”.
• Romans 12:9-13 “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil;
cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference
to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit,
serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to
prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality”.
• Others
• In our Hymns For Worship #92
• LORD, help me live from day to day in such a self-forgetful way that
even when I kneel to pray my prayer shall be for others.
• Help me in all the work I do to ever be sincere and true, and know that
all I’d do for You must needs be done for others.
• Let ‘self’ be crucified and slain and buried deep; and all
in vain may efforts be to rise again, unless to live for others.
• Others, LORD, yes, others, let this my motto be, help me to live for
others, that I may live like Thee.
• Judgment—Matthew 25:37-40
• “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, “Lord, when
did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You drink? And when
did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? And
when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And the King will answer
and say to them, truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of
these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me”.
• Judgment—Matthew 25:45
• “Then He will answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, to the
extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it
to Me”.
• Galatians 6:1-5, 10
• “Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are
spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to
yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thus
fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing,
he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will
have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another,
for each one shall bear his own load”…..”So then, while we
have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are
of the household of the faith”.
• Our Duty To Others
• As the words to the song and the sentiment of these verses tells us
that we do have a very important duty towards others.
• This requires humility on our part and a self-sacrifice to help and
assist others as we have opportunity.
• Notice I did not say, as we have convenience.
• There will always be those who are in need.
• We may find ourselves there at some point.
• We would hope that others treat us as we want to be treated.
• Conclusion
• If we want to live like the Christ, we must do everything we do for
the benefit of others souls.
• True, we must be wise and not wasteful and that will require wisdom.
• How you treat others will determine your soul’s destiny.
• There will be much more to discuss, but for now,
• Be considerate of others.
