From Homosexuality to Salvation

Homosexuals have an impossible task in justifying their lifestyle with the word of God. Oh, there are several who attempt it. In a booklet entitled, “Out of the Closet”—a debate on homosexuality and Christianity—Jeff Asher debated Robert Williams, an Episcopal priest for the Metropolitan Community Church in Amarillo, Texas, who claims the Bible teaches favorably of homosexuality and that many of its leading characters were gay. There are even other gay clergy who claim Jesus was homosexual!!! Can you imagine the perversity of such reasoning? And yet, there are even “brethren” (people who once stood for the truth of the New Testament) who now openly defend homosexuality (e.g., Leroy Garret in Restoration Review, September, 1989, as quoted by J.T. Smith, Gospel Truths, June, 1990).

It is amazing what we learn to condone once we depart from the truth. And that is exactly what we must learn as we consider the perversity of those attempting to condone homosexuality—denying the truth is the first step towards apostasy. We are not the first generation to have people attempt such a feat; people have done it for years and in times past. This is one of the reasons for Romans chapter one. Paul was letting the world know that those who practice homosexuality are doing so out of their own perversity and unwillingness to submit to God’s truth—“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be know of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them” (vs. 18,19). What obvious truth of God must a homosexual deny in order to justify such behavior? Creation! (vs. 20) By the very fact God made male and female genders to produce and sustain life is evidence of His will toward sexuality. A homosexual couldn’t exist if this law were not so! And yet, he or she has the audacity to say it is natural for them to have their desires, and that even God made them that way. That’s a lie! Not only because God says so in His word, but also because God has created a world that would not exist in a homosexual environment. It is contrary to nature!

While most of us, if not all, are ready to stand in opposition to homosexuality, we must at the same time be ready to stand against other things not found in God’s will. The process of believing a lie in religion begins with people “professing to be wise” enough to live beyond the word of God, who “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” and “approve of those who practice them” (vs. 32). And God lets it happen! When people don’t want to “retain God in their knowledge, God” gives “them over to a debased mind, to do those things that are not fitting” (vs. 28). This is true of sexual immorality as well as other things that contradict God’s revealed will (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12). Those who practice heterosexuality, yet teach and believe a false plan of salvation or do things in worship not found in the New Testament are no different than a homosexual when it comes to trying to justify something not in the word of God. Anyone who departs from the word of God is not of God, homosexual or not.
