LESSON SIX – “R E P E N T A N C E”
The basic meaning of repentance is “a change of mind, leading to a turning
from sin.” THERE IS NOTHING MYSTERIOUS ABOUT IT. Where our hearts have
once loved evil, we turn and begin to love good. Where we once had set our affections
on things in the world, we repent, and then set them on the things of God. This
is what God commands all responsible people everywhere to do -- to REPENT (Acts
17:30).
The need for repentance is summed up in the words of the Savior in Luke 13:3,
“except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish.” They who perish
will be cast into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone (Revelation 20:15;
21:8). May we be duly impressed with God’s truth as we study the following
passages:
1. Luke 24:46-47, Christ said, “Thus it is written, and thus it behoved
_______________________ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that ________________________________ and __________________________ of
____________ should be preached in His ______________ among all nations, beginning
at ______________________________ .”
2. Acts 2:37-38, “Now when they ________________________ this, they were
pricked in their ______________________ , and said unto ____________________
and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, _________________ shall we
_________ ? Then _______________ said unto them, ___________________ , and be
_______________________ every _____________ of you in the ________________ of
Jesus Christ for the _________________________ of ____________ .”
3. Acts 17:30, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but _________________
commandeth ___________ _____________every __________________ to ____________________
.”
4. Luke 15:7, There is _____________ in heaven when one sinner ____________________.
5. 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is . . . . . not _________________________ that
______________ should ____________________ , but that ___________ should come
to __________________________ .”
6. Romans 2:4, “Or despisest thou the __________________ of His __________________________
and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the _______________________________
of ________________ leadeth thee to _______________________________ ?”
-- CORRECTING FALSE CONCEPTIONS --
1. ERROR: “Repentance is the same thing as salvation -- So, if you repent,
you are saved.”
TRUTH: The fact that we have ceased to love sin and have turned from it does
not mean that we are saved; not yet. Saul, a man of Tarsus, was in a state of
penitence when Ananias said to him in Acts 22:16, “And now why tarriest
thou? arise, and be baptized, and ___________________ away thy _________________
, calling on the name of the Lord.”
2. ERROR: “Repentance is a mysterious experience which we pray for and
wait for.”
TRUTH: Repentance is a command (Acts 17:30). If it were a mysterious experience,
IT COULD NOT BE COMMANDED. No mysterious action is recorded when Peter commanded
in Acts 2:38, " ________________________ , and be baptized every one of
you in the
name of Jesus Christ for the ______________________________ of ________________
.”
3. ERROR: "Repentance is not necessary to salvation.”
TRUTH: Repentance is UNTO life (Acts 11:18). In Acts 17:30 God COMMANDS all
men
everywhere to ________________________. Can one be saved who lives in disobedience
to the command of God? YES ( ) NO ( ) -- Check the correct answer.
MULTIPLE CHOICE (UNDERLINE THE CORRECT ANSWER)
