LESSON TWO – “THE COVENANTS”

Essential to our understanding of God's Word is our knowledge of the difference between the Old and New Covenants. ALL of the Bible is true, but only the NEW Testament or NEW Covenant of Jesus Christ NOW applies to us in this present dispensation or age. The apostle Peter, In 2 Peter 1:12, states that we need to be established in the PRESENT truth. There is such a thing, then, as PAST truth and PRESENT truth. God told NOAH to build an ark (Genesis 6). This is not PRESENT truth, for God has not instructed US to build an ark. In Hebrews 8:8 God said, "I will make a new covenant:” That NEW Covenant is the PRESENT truth in which we must be established.

1. Hebrews 8:7, "For if the first ________________________________ had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the ___________________________ .”
(The Covenant of Jesus Christ, the New Testament, is faultless; therefore we return to an inferior covenant if we go back to the Law of Moses for our guidance in this present dispensation. PLEASE READ HEBREWS 10:9-10.)

2. God said the New Covenant is not _____________________ to the Old. (Hebrews 8:8-9)

3. The Old Covenant was founded upon the _____________ of animals. (Hebrews 9:18-20)

4. The New Covenant is founded upon the blood of __________________ . (Hebrews 9:12)

5. Jesus Christ is the _________________________ of the New Covenant. (Hebrews 9:15) (Christ is the ONLY One we have, or need, to serve in this office.)

6. The Bible declares that the blood of bulls and goats ______________________take away
_____________ (Hebrews 10:4) Check Your Answer Carefully With This Verse!!

7. Christ sealed the New Testament with His ____________________ . (Hebrews 9:14-23)
(Thus sealed, the New Testament is our authority, rather than the Old Testament.)

8. Hebrews 12:2. "Looking unto Jesus. the __________________ and ______________________
of our _________________ .”

9. The Bible teaches that Christ becomes the _____________________ of eternal salvation
to all them that ______________ Him. (Hebrews 5:9)

10. The New Testament teaches that under the New Covenant Children of God are married to Christ. Romans 7:4 says that the Jews had to become ____________to the _________ before they could be married to another. In the same passage Paul shows that no one could be married to Christ until Christ was ________________ from the dead.• This clearly explains that people were married to Christ (became Christians) AFTER Christ was raised from the dead. Note that BEFORE the resurrection of Christ, people lived and died under the OLD COVENANT, but AFTER the resurrection of Christ, people were made Christians according to the laws of the NEW COVENANT.

PLEASE READ Exodus 34:27-35, and also 2 Corinthians 3:6-18. This shows us that the authority of the Old Testament was abolished IN CHRIST; that is, the authority of the Old Testament YIELDED to the authority of Christ in the New Testament.

NOW PLEASE READ Colossians 2:14-17. In the blanks below list FIVE THINGS Paul used to illustrate that the Old Law was nailed to the cross -- things that were in effect under the Old Law, but that ARE NOT in effect under the New Testament:
(1) ____MEAT_________ (2) ___________________ (3) ___________________
(4) ___________________ (5) ___________________

PURPOSES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT:
1. To teach us needed moral lessons -- 1 Corinthians 10:6, "Now these things were our ______________________ , to the intent we should not ______________ after ______________ things, as they also lusted.” Verse 11, “Now all these things happened unto them for ______________________ : and they are written for our ________________________ . . . “

2. To teach principles upon which God dealt with people --- when they obeyed, they were blessed; when they disobeyed, they were punished (Read Romans 15:4).

3. To prove, by prophecy, that Jesus Christ is the Son Of God -- 2 Peter 1:19, "We have also a more sure word of ________________________ ; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the DAY STAR arise in your hearts:" (CHRIST is the Morning Star - Revelation 22:16.)

4. To prove the New Testament by types, or shadows - Hebrews 10:1, "For the law, having a ____________________ of good things to come, and not the very _________________ of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect:'

READ GALATIANS 5:1-4, "Stand fast therefore in the _____________________ wherewith __________________ hath made us free, and be not ___________________________ again with the yoke of _____________________ . Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, ____________________ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a ____________________ to do the _________________ law. Christ is become of no ____________________ unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the ___________ ; ye are fallen from _________________ .”
