LESSON ONE – “THE WORD OF GOD”

The BIBLE is the revelation of God's will to man. It is GOD'S WORD in that He is its Author. Over a period of nearly 1600 years God unfolded His revelation to human writers by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament is the inspired Word of God (read 2 Peter 1:21). The New Testament likewise is inspired revelation of the Mind of God (read Matthew 10:20; Acts 2:4; 1 Corinthians 14:37). Peter declares that God has given us ALL THINGS that pertain unto life and godliness through the KNOWLEDGE OF HIM that hath called us to glory and virtue (2 Peter 1:3-4). One of the last warnings of Christ regards adding to and taking from His Word (Revelation 22:18-19).
The conclusion then is that the Bible ALONE, without addition, subtraction or alteration is the ONLY TRUE GUIDE for humanity in religious matters. We dare not have any creed but Christ, nor any rule book but the Bible.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING REFERENCES CAREFULLY AND FILL IN THE BLANKS:

1. Genesis l:3, “And God _______________, let there be light: and there was light.”
(This is the first reference in the Bible to the WORD of God.)
2. Psalm 33:6, “By the Word of the Lord were the ____________________ made.”
3. Hebrews 11:3, “Through faith we understand that the ________________ were framed by the ______________ of God:”
4. Hebrews 4:12, “The Word of God is __________________, and ______________________, and sharper than any two-edged sword.”
5. The Word of God gives _______________ and ________________________ (Psalm 119:130).
6. What IS the Word of God? Here are some answers:
a. Jeremiah 23:29, “Is not my Word like as a _______________ ? saith the Lord; and like a __________________ that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
b. John 6:63, “They are ___________________ and they are ____________ .”
c. Luke 8:11, “Now the parable is this: The ________________ is the Word of God.”
d. Ephesians 6:17, “and the ____________________ of the __________________, which is the Word of God.”
e. Psalm 119:105, “Thy Word is a __________________ unto my feet, and a _______________ unto my path.”
7. Things the Word of God does for us:
a. John 17:17, “____________________________ them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth.”
b. James 1:18, “Of His own will _________________ He us with the Word of truth.”
c. Acts 11:14, “Who shall tell thee Words, whereby thou..…..shalt be ____________________.”
8. How are we made clean? John 15:3, “through the ______________ which I have spoken....”
9. We are born again by the incorruptible ______________ which is the ______________of God (1 Peter 1:23).
10. HOW is one born by the Word of God? Look one verse back -- 1 Peter 1:22, “seeing ye have ________________________ your souls in _____________________the truth….”
(The new birth cannot be accomplished until the incorruptible seed, the Word of God,
is planted in the heart and OBEYED. The doctrine that a person can be born again by some mysterious force acting on the heart before that person obeys God is FOREIGN TO BIBLE TEACHING. Carefully compare 1 Peter 1:23 with 1 Peter 1:22.)
11. The right attitude toward the Word of God is one of being ____________________ of the Word, and not ______________________ only (James 1:22).
12. By what will we BE JUDGED? John 12:48, “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not
my ________________ , hath one that judgeth him: the ________________ that I have spoken, the same shall ____________________ him in the last ____________ .”
13. 2 Timothy 4:2, Every preacher should “ ______________________ the ________________ .”
(This forbids the preaching of philosophy, human opinions, and the creeds of men.)
14. What is God's power to SAVE? Romans 1:16, The _____________________ of Christ.
15. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All _______________________ is given by _________________________ of God, and is profitable for __________________________ , for ________________________ , for correction, for _______________________________ in righteousness: That the man of God may be _______________________ , thoroughly furnished unto ____________ good works.”
SOME OBSERVATIONS: (Circle TRUE or FALSE)
True / False 1. All we know about God, Christ, heaven, hell, church, and how to be saved
must be learned from the Bible.
True / False 2. Human creed books in religion are necessary to our salvation.
True / False 3. The Word of God is complete, settled, sealed by the blood of Christ, and we
are forbidden to add to it or take from it (Revelation 22:18-19).
True / False 4. If we respect the Word of God we will use other rule books for our belief.

We hope you have enjoyed this lesson. When you have completed it, return it . It will be checked for accuracy and returned to you, along with LESSON 2, "THE COVENANTS.” Notice that we have used the King James Version. You may prefer another version, but the lessons will be easier if you use the King James wording to fill in the blanks. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please send them to us and we will be happy to give attention to them. THANK YOU!
